Prisoner, the high-speed action series led by Izuka Hoyle, has been renewed for a second season at Sky.

The Hollywood Reporter can confirm that Scottish star Hoyle will reprise her role as prison transport officer Amber Todd, with production set to begin later this year.

Matt Charman’s six-part show has proven successful for Sky since its April 30 debut, accruing significant early viewing across all six episodes. It follows Amber (Hoyle), who is tasked with escorting Tibor (Tahar Rahim), a trained killer and high-value inmate, to court to testify against his elite crime syndicate. When their convoy is brutally ambushed, they are left handcuffed together and, on the run, forcing her to put her life in his hands.

Hoyle caught up with THR to unpack Amber and Tibor’s relationship last month: “I think what got me most excited was the handcuff business,” she said. “It’s the concept of these two very different people handcuffed together, put through their paces, given the same objective, and how the story changes from a cat-and-mouse format to a psychological drama about what that does to two people, specifically Amber.”

Series two will expand the tense, morally complex world of Prisoner, with Amber back in uniform — but not back to normal. Still carrying the scars of past events and struggling to hold her family together, she is tasked with escorting a polarizing U.S. academic (turned notorious killer) for extradition, a woman whose case has divided opinion. When there is an attempted execution from within law enforcement, Amber is framed for murder — challenging everything she stands for.

Prisoner is produced by Binocular in association with Sky Studios. The new series is written and created by showrunner Matt Charman who is joined by Sophie Petzal as writer. Executive producers are Matt Charman, Foz Allan, Sophie Petzal and Adrian Sturges for Sky Studios.

The second series will be available on Sky in the U.K. and Ireland, with NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution handling international sales.
