The Euphoria actress, who has become a role model for the trans community, opened up during a recent interview with Elle magazine. “I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much,” she shared, referring to the gender-affirming procedure that changes a person’s genitals to better align with their gender identity.
“For a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it,” Schafer explained. However, she described “hitting a wall again and again where this theoretical queer utopia didn’t match up with the world she encountered every day, and the way she personally wanted to show up in it,” Elle wrote.

Following her surgery in December, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes actress’ recovery stretched into early 2026. Since she was forced to lie down during that period, she recalled renting out a big apartment where loved ones could visit.
Throughout her journey with gender identity, Schafer admitted she’s wrestled with queerness as an idea and philosophy “versus how it applies and works in real life, in the context of the world that we’re living in.”
But she also described the evolution of queerness as a “magical thing,” adding, “On an ideological level, it’s about possibility and expansion and growth, and being on that journey and finding yourself.”
While Schafer’s perspective on gender identity has been more fluid over the years, she told Elle that her current views have landed somewhere “flatter.” She said, “I’m a woman. I’m a girl.”
The Mother Mary actress previously said she’s been hesitant to say the word “trans” in interviews because she doesn’t want to be reduced to her gender identity.
“I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on,” she told GQ in 2024. “I’ve gotten offered tons of trans roles, and I just don’t want to do it. I don’t want to talk about it.”
