Publisher 831 Stories has signed a first-look deal with Hulu for the streamer to develop series based on its books, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively announce.

The first project under the deal is a TV adaptation of Alexandra Romanoff’s Big Fan book series from 831 Stories, anchored by the imprint’s top-selling title, Big Fan. The story follows a political strategist “tainted by a scandalous ex” who “finds an unexpected career detour when her teenage boy band crush offers a second chance at the spotlight…and maybe something more.” Disney’s 20th Television will produce.

Michelle Nader (Shifting Gears, Hulu’s Deli Boys) will write and exec produce the adaptation. 831 Stories co-founders Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo will co-executive produce the series in development.

831 Stories is a romantic fiction company that “offers romance fans a myriad of ways to engage with the genre, from monthly novella releases with ripped-from-the-pages product and bonus content, to community driven programming and events, to a weekly podcast, Radio 831, that dives into the trends, topics, and news that has love-story lovers talking.”

Other books in the Big Fan series include Square Waves, an enemies-to-lovers romance, and the upcoming Vacation Self, releasing on Aug. 25, which follows a budding romance between a former boy band member and a florist.

Cerulo and Mazur launched their romance fiction company in 2024 with the intent of building an immersive fan community around their books and expanding with events, merch, multimedia and more.

“We want to be hip, horny Hallmark,” Mazur told Glamour in 2024 about their company. “We really believe that there’s room for a big mainstream romance book household brand that people recognize but also broadens the audience for love stories.”

“The comic book comparison felt so apt because it’s that exact same desire once you finish the story—to stay immersed in it, right?” Mazur also said. “You’re just grasping for how else you can continue to exist in the world of these characters. It’s part of what drives the rate of consumption in romance, because it’s always a little bittersweet to finish one. Any romance reader knows that feeling.”

Mazur and Cerulo are repped by UTA. Nader is repped by CAA and Hansen Jacobson.
