The House on Tuesday rejected a Democratic-backed war powers resolution directing President Trump to remove troops from hostilities in Lebanon.
The lower chamber voted 189-235 to oppose the resolution. Two Republicans supported the resolution, while 22 Democrats voted against it.
The resolution was sponsored by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.). It notes that “nothing in this concurrent resolution may be construed to prevent or limit security cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces or the protection of diplomatic facilities.”
The Trump administration, Israel and Lebanon agreed to a framework last week that would kick out Iran’s influence in Lebanon through its support of the militant group Hezbollah and pave the way for an Israeli withdrawal from territory it holds in the south.
“For Lebanon, this Framework provides a genuine pathway out of a long crisis. For Israel, it creates a verifiable path to removing the persistent threat on its northern border,” a statement from the three parties reads.
The House had previously rejected a different Lebanon war powers resolution, also introduced by Tlaib, in early June.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and a majority of Democrats opposed it. Rep. Thomas Massie (Ky.) was the lone Republican to vote in favor of the resolution, while Democratic Reps. Betty McCollum (Minn.) and Derek Tran (Calif.) voted present.
Jeffries wrote in a statement at the time that “currently there are no U.S. servicemembers involved in combat operations or hostilities in Lebanon,” and that the best legislative vehicle to take action on the issue would be the war powers resolution they voted on this week.
