Democratic Rep. Seth Magaziner (R.I.) on Tuesday took Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to task over federal immigration officers fatally shooting two individuals in the last week.

“When will this madness stop? When he took his position, Secretary Mulin said that his goal was to get the department off the front page of the news,” Magaziner said on the House floor, referring to remarks Mullin made during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

“My goal in six months is that we’re not in the lead story every single day,” Mullin said at the March hearing. “My goal is for people to understand we’re out there, we’re protecting them, and we’re working with them.”

But referencing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers fatally shooting a man in Texas and another man in Maine this month, an animated Magaziner criticized Mullin’s stewardship of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“Well, you’re back on the godd— front page now, with two innocent people gunned down in broad daylight,” he yelled, while waving a newspaper in the air.

An ICE officer on Monday fatally shot a 26-year-old Colombian man in Biddeford, Maine. DHS said the officer shot the man, who was driving in his car, out of fear “for public safety.”

Maine Sen. Angus King (I) told The Associated Press that Mullin informed him the man was not the subject of the warrant the ICE officers were serving.

King and fellow Maine Sen. Susan Collins (R) have called for an impartial investigation into the shooting. Citing a conversation she had with Mullin, Collins said Monday the Boston office of DHS’s Inspector General had taken over the probe.

The man who was shot was authorized to work in the U.S. and had a Social Security number, according to the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente! Maine.

“A 26-year-old man came to Maine to live and work, and now his family is mourning his death following an incident involving ICE. This is devastating, enraging, and unacceptable. His loved ones deserve answers, and the public deserves a full and transparent account of what happened,” the organizations wrote in a joint statement

In Texas on July 7, ICE officers shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo as he was heading to work.

Salgado Araujo, 52, lived in the Houston area for 35 years, was attempting to obtain a work permit and was close to obtaining legal status, according to his family. His relatives have also said Salgado Araujo did not have a criminal record.

Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-Texas) said acting ICE Director David Venturella told her the man was not the intended target of the agency’s enforcement operation. While ICE said Salgado Araujo was trying to weaponize his car against its officers, other men in the vehicle and a lawyer for the man’s family contradicted that account.
