Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) on Thursday re-upped Democratic-led warnings about election interference ahead of the midterm elections.
Democratic lawmakers have repeatedly voiced concerns about the Trump administration’s efforts to access voter data from many U.S. states and cited President Trump’s false claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
“There is no question that Donald Trump is going to try to interfere with our elections,” Garcia said during an interview with MS NOW. “He’s already done it. He’s already tried to steal a presidential election. He’s already tried to interfere with local registrars of voters.”
Garcia said the president will “use everything he can, every lever he has” to specifically target races with tight margins this November.
“There will be an all-out assault on our election process,” Garcia said. “It’s already starting, but we’re also preparing, and in support of the American public, are prepared for it as well.”
The Democratic lawmaker’s warning comes amid a push from the Trump administration for Congress to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, which the president has called his top legislative priority.
This sweeping election reform bill would require Americans to show proof of citizenship when they register to vote and present a valid ID at the ballot box. Democrats warn that these requirements could disenfranchise millions of voters, including married women whose last names are not reflected on their official identification documents.
The bill passed the House in February, and it is now held up in the Senate by strong Democratic opposition. Trump has refused to sign a landmark bipartisan housing bill recently approved by Congress until the SAVE America Act has been passed.
Garcia said Democrats are “preparing with partners across the country” to counter potential attempts from the Trump administration to interfere in the 2026 elections.
“There are organizations already mobilized on the ground,” the lawmaker told MS NOW. “We’ve been working with legal teams across the country to ensure that we are ready.”
