Hawai'i International Film Festival The Hawai’i International Film Festival presented by Halekulani will open its 46th edition, HIFF46, with the world premiere of “The Navigator,” directed by Jordan Manley, at the historic Hawai’i Theatre Center.
“The Navigator” is a made in Hawai’i documentary centered on Nainoa Thompson, who nearly half a century ago became the first Native Hawaiian in 600 years to sail from Hawai’i to Tahiti using no modern instruments. The documentary follows him on a 2,400-mile return voyage accompanied by a new generation of trainee wayfinders, drawing on wisdom instilled by master navigator Mau Piailug. The screening also marks HIFF’s first opening night held at the Hawai’i Theatre Center since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
