(NewsNation) — New research suggests GLP-1 drugs may help address fertility issues in men.
Scientists at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire and Warwick Medical School found improvements in testosterone levels, sperm count, and sperm size and shape.
Warwick Medical School’s Dr. Pratibha Natesh said the findings support treating underlying conditions rather than relying on hormone therapy.
“The analysis supports a shift away from prescribing testosterone replacement in men with obesity and low testosterone and toward treating the underlying cause — excess weight and poor metabolic health — which can naturally restore hormone levels and preserve fertility,” she said.
Researchers analyzed the effects of GLP-1 drugs in men ages 18 to 65 over 24 weeks. They found liraglutide increased testosterone, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone levels, while semaglutide improved sperm morphology.
“Improving metabolic health can have positive effects far beyond weight alone,” Natesh added.
According to Yale Medicine, about 15% of couples in the U.S. struggle to conceive, and male infertility is a factor in more than half of those cases.
How does obesity impact male fertility?
Low testosterone and poor sperm count are commonly linked to obesity and excess weight.
Health experts say excess body fat can reduce testosterone levels, making weight loss more difficult. Obesity can also lower levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which helps transport testosterone in the bloodstream.
