Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) on Sunday said that Iran still holding onto its “nuclear dust” justifies U.S. strikes on the Islamic regime after both countries dropped their interim deal and hostilities resumed.
“Now remember, they have nuclear dust. Why isn’t that important? Why doesn’t that justify to continue to justify these kinds of strikes?” Fetterman said on “Sunday Morning Futures” with Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo. “I think it’s an important thing to break the Iranian military regime as they continue to do.”
Fetterman has been among the very few Democrats in Congress to support Trump’s conflict with Iran. Earlier on Sunday, he told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union” that it was “incredibly important to confront Iran and to confront Iran with their ambitions, specifically nuclear ambitions.”
“Every single Democrat that I’m aware of says we must never let Iran build a nuclear bomb,” Fetterman told Tapper. “And here we are again, right now, negotiations and all other kinds of strategies have been employed over the last 47 years, and they’ve been accessible up to now.”
“And so where I’m at –– I think we’re in an important point in our time, and I think it’s entirely appropriate to continue to get Iran,” he added.
The U.S. and Iran have largely walked away from an interim peace deal that would lead to a final deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to lower high gas prices, among other core components.
The eighth day of U.S. strikes on Saturday intensified to target a port facility, energy infrastructure and bridges. The latest attacks follow the deaths of two U.S. service members killed in an Iranian attacks on U.S. air bases in Jordan on Friday. A U.S. service member also went missing following the attacks.
President Trump told NewsNation’s Hannah Brandt that the deaths were a “very sad thing.”
“We hate to see it happen,” Trump told Brandt. “They were in service of our country. And they, every one of them will never allow, they’ll fight to the death. But never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”
The U.S. military death toll in the Iran war is now at 16.
The war’s economic impact has been largely unpopular with most Americans, who have been unsatisfied with the Trump administration’s reasoning for striking Iran. An Economist/YouGov poll published last week found that 46 percent of respondents say they believe the Iran war will go on “a year or more” from now.
