Anthropic can now share its most advanced AI model with over 100 companies after the U.S. government lifted its export ban on Claude Mythos 5 on Friday, a spokesperson for Anthropic confirmed in a statement to the Hill.

The decision reflects a major change since the government imposed restrictions on Mythos 5 and its weaker counterpart, Fable 5, on June 12 due to security concerns with these models.

“We are working to provision the approved set of providers and restore their access to Mythos 5 as quickly as possible,” the company said in a statement. “We are pleased to see this progress and continue to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again.”

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick notified the company of this change in a letter obtained by the Hill.

“Since the issuance of my June 12 letter, Anthropic has worked with the U.S. government to address risks associated with Covered Models,” Lutnick wrote in this letter, referring to the Mythos and Fable models.

“These efforts have yielded significant progress,” the secretary continued. “In addition, Anthropic has committed to work with the U.S. government on protocols and standards and releases for Covered Models.”

Lutnick said that “certain trusted partners” will now be able to access Mythos 5, and he noted that he can amend this approved list of partners “at any time.”

“I reserve the right to reevaluate and adjust the scope of license requirements on the Covered Models, should circumstances change,” the secretary wrote.

The letter notably does not mention any change to the restrictions for the Fable 5 model.

Lutnick’s letter comes on the same day that another leading AI company, OpenAI, released its own powerful model, GPT-5.6, to several government-approved partners.

The Hill has reached out to the Commerce Department for comment.
