Former deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews said Vice President Vance does not have the charisma that President Trump has following an incident where Vance fat-shamed a conservative pundit.
Matthews, in an appearance on CNN’s “NewsNight” on Friday, discussed a post on the social platform X from Vance that weighed in on an ongoing debate about burrito affordability.
During the segment, Matthews said, “People are receptive to Trump’s trolling, but I don’t think people are as receptive to JD Vance’s because Trump is at least, like him or not, charismatic. JD Vance is negative rizz when it comes to charisma.”
“I’m surprised to hear Mark say this. If you’ve ever met him in person, it’s quite obvious the man has never missed a burrito,” Vance wrote in the post responding to Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen.
When asked about the post on Hugh Hewitt’s Salem News Channel show on Thursday, Vance said the post was a joke.
“Maybe in two years you’ll look back and say, ‘I wish I hadn’t said that,’ but right now I feel pretty good about that,” Vance said.
Vance is considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate by the Republican Party, alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
President Trump pushed back on a report that said he pushed donors to back Vance in 2028, stating to reporters, “I think he’s great, but we’re way too early to even be thinking about that.”
The competition between Vance and Rubio has largely remained behind closed doors, with the vice president likening it to Trump’s former reality show, “The Apprentice.”
“I just don’t think it sounds like the president of the United States to have a televised competition for who would succeed him as his apprentice,” Vance said at a press conference in May. “I just think that’s not at all what you would expect the president to do.”
A straw poll from last week conducted during the Western Conservative Summit found that 57 percent of the 500-plus respondents backed Rubio, with Vance coming in second at 21 percent.
