The Age of Goodbyes” begins, in more ways than one, with a curse.

In Li Zi Shu’s sprawling Malaysian Chinese novel, a family is said to be marked by early death; in Edmund Yeo‘s screen adaptation, in the Special Presentations section of the Toronto Film Festival, that curse becomes the hinge on which five decades of Malaysian history swing, carried by a woman named Du Li An and the two men, one thought dead, who share the same face.
