Americans’ economic pessimism has eased slightly this month, according to a new poll from Gallup.
In the poll, 22 percent said the U.S.’s economic conditions are “excellent” or “good,” while 32 percent said they were “only fair” and 44 percent said they were “poor.”
A month ago, 19 percent said the U.S.’s economic conditions were “excellent” or “good,” with 35 percent describing the conditions as “only fair” and 45 percent calling them “poor.”
As the midterms approach, Republicans and President Trump have been facing concerns around the economy. Tariffs, which the president recently announced, may create risk for Republican candidates, with Democrats looking to go after the GOP over the impact of Trump’s trade agenda.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Sunday asserted that his party will address the cost of living if it takes back control of Congress.
“In 100 days, you can vote for an America that is affordable and lower the cost of groceries, gas, and housing. In 100 days, you can vote for an America where affordable healthcare is available to every single citizen,” Jeffries said at a rally in Pennsylvania.
In the Gallup poll, 67 percent of respondents said the U.S.’s economic conditions are “getting worse,” while 28 percent said they are “getting better,” 3 percent said they are the “same” and 2 percent had “no opinion.”
In June’s poll, 72 percent of respondents said the country’s economic conditions were “getting worse,” while 23 percent said they were “getting better,” 3 percent said they were the “same” and 1 percent had “no opinion.”
The Gallup poll took place from July 1 to 19 and surveyed 1,200 people. Its margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points.
