Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.), who chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, predicted Democrats will take back control of the House in November.
“We are absolutely going to take back the House,” she told The Hill’s Amie Parnes at the second annual Hill Nation Summit.
DelBene noted her party is “on offense” in 46 districts that Democrats hope to flip from red to blue during the midterms. If the caucus can hold its current seats, including vacancies, they only need to flip three seats to take back the gavel.
As for how to accomplish that, the Washington Democrat highlighted her party’s focus on the financial concerns of Americans, such as healthcare costs and the economy. She also said Democratic candidates will continue to highlight the impact of President Trump’s agenda, from his tariff policies to the war with Iran, on the cost of living.
“Across the board, folks are saying, ‘What are you [going to] do to help us?’” DelBene said.
Annual inflation dipped from 4.2 percent in May to 3.5 percent in June. However, Trump resuming the war with Iran threatens to drive another spike in energy prices.
Two years ago, Democrats failed to wrestle back control of the lower chamber after Republicans flipped the House in 2022.
DelBene indicated Wednesday her party will have better results this November due to a more effective messaging strategy in red and purple districts.
“When people know who our candidates are and where they stand, we win,” the Washington lawmaker told Parnes.
GOP Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), the chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said later in the summit he expects his party to leverage its fundraising and redistricting advantage to retain the House majority.
He said those efforts will be spurred on if Trump hits the road for GOP candidates.
“The left, when they’re out of power, they’re more motivated,” said Hudson, who met with the president and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) at the White House on Monday.
“We’ve got to drive up the motivation for our side,” he added. And part of that’s just communicating what’s at stake in this election. I’m not concerned that we can’t do that.”
With just more than 100 days out until Election Day, Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ) forecasts Democrats will hold a 227-208 edge in the House after the midterms, a pickup of 12 seats. There is a 62 percent chance of Democrats taking control of the lower chamber, according to DDHQ’s breakdown.
Hudson pushed back on those findings, insisting the GOP would hold the majority.
DDHQ’s Geoffrey Skelley said Democrats performing well in House races “could end up reverberating” in the Senate, where Democrats need to flip four seats to win the majority. DDHQ projects a three-seat Democratic gain.
