A neighborhood bar in Washington, D.C., is running a deal that could score customers a free tab during Team USA’s World Cup match against Australia on Friday afternoon.

The deal is the result of a partnership with the bar TallBoy and prediction market platform Kalshi, and the promotion increases based on the number of goals the U.S. wins by.

A U.S. win by a one-point margin will get customers 25 percent off their bill and a two-point victory will increase the discount to 50 percent. If the team wins by three points, their tab is completely free.

TallBoy owner Peter Bayne told The Hill that the bar covered around $4,000 in food and drinks last week when the U.S. won 4-1 in its game against Paraguay.

Bayne, a former high school varsity soccer coach and a lifelong fan of the sport, said he got the idea from New York bar The Jeffrey’s NBA Finals promotion earlier this month, which covered up to $100 tabs when the New York Knicks won Game 1 of the tournament.

After talking with some of his friends about whether TallBoy could run a similar deal for the World Cup, one of Bayne’s former athletes offered to connect him with someone he knew at Kalshi.

The bar owner said he then placed a bet on a U.S. victory in the game against Paraguay and something called a “ladder bet” based on the number of goals the U.S. won by in the game.

“I had great odds of winning by three goals, and I got covered,” Bayne said of last week’s game. “So not only did TallBoy do well — and my bartenders did well and all the customers got free tabs, so they obviously did the best — but the U.S. won and they looked phenomenal. And it just made the game so exciting.”

A Kalshi spokesperson told The Hill that the prediction platform has seen an increased interest from small businesses in offering similar promotions after The Jeffrey’s initial deal.

In addition to TallBoy, Swiss watch company AXIA Time is running a special during the sports tournament. The “World Cup Champion Guarantee” offers customers the opportunity to buy a country-specific watch with the potential to get a discount on an additional special-edition watch if that nation wins, according to the company’s website.

“I see it growing and people getting more interested in it,” Bayne said.

“It’s a little bit harder to get comfortable with this as a business owner, and then you have to figure out what’s your deal. I mean, not everything is going to be by the goals, like the way I structured it or $100 off the way The Jeffrey structured it,” he continued. “And so I think people can get more creative with what the offering is and then figure out how to hedge that bet using a tool like Kalshi.”

Bayne said he plans to make a determination about whether to continue this promotion for future U.S. games after the Friday match against Australia. The game kicks off at 3 p.m. from the Seattle Stadium in Washington state.

“It’s basically a zero-risk bet that you might get a free bar tab tomorrow if the U.S. beats Australia, so come on by,” he said.
