David Chang CNN CNN is getting into business with David Chang and filmmaker Morgan Neville.
The celebrity chef has signed on to host a travel food series for the cable news channel, a show that will see him take an “off-the-grid road trip through America’s food, culture and communities.”
While the food-focused travelogue is a well-established format by now, the new CNN show will turn the concept on its head by not using any pre-planned itineraries or recommendations. Instead, Chang and some of his friends will follow local leads and tips and take spontaneous detours to discover “the stories, people and meals that don’t make it into guidebooks.”
Neville (Lorne, Man on the Run) will produce the series through his Tremolo Productions along with Chang’s Majordomo Media.
“What I’ve always admired about CNN’s storytelling is its willingness to explore culture through real human experiences,” Chang says in a statement. “That’s the kind of work Morgan and I both care deeply about, stories that feel personal, complicated, and honest. I’m thrilled to partner with him on this new project!”
“At a moment when so much discovery is filtered through algorithms and online recommendations, David celebrates the value of getting a little lost and rediscovering the joy of wandering,” adds Amy Entelis, executive VP of talent, CNN Original and creative development. “He has an unmatched ability to move between humor, insight and honesty, and this series captures the richness of American life through the lens of food, travel and human connection.”
Chang, the chef behind the Momofuku restaurant empire, has been a regular presence on TV in recent years, from Dinner Time Live and Ugly Delicious on Netflix to The Next Thing You Eat and Chrissy & Dave Dine Out.
CNN, meanwhile, has a long history in the format, dating back to Parts Unknown, the groundbreaking series hosted by Anthony Bourdain. It has subsequently hosted shows that explored the intersection of travel and food, fronted by the likes of Stanley Tucci, Tony Shalhoub, and Daniel Dae Kim.
