Crofts, born and raised in Texas, founded Seals & Crofts with partner Jim Seals in 1969, after the two had played together in the band The Champs. They released their eponymous debut album that same year, eventually signing a major label deal with Warner Bros. Records. Seals and Crofts reached their major breakthrough in 1972 with their fourth album Summer Breeze, which included the hit single of the same name, with Crofts on lead vocals. Summer Breeze went double-platinum, and the single peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100, according to Billboard.
They kept the momentum going with their next album Diamond Girl, whose eponymous single also became a hit while the album itself went gold. Seals & Crofts split after releasing the album The Longest Road in 1980, eventually recording and releasing their final album Traces together in 2004.
Seals died nearly four years ago, in June of 2022 at age 80.
Per the Associated Press, aside from daughter Lua, Crofts is also survived by his second wife, Louise Crofts, as well as two more children, Faizi and Amelia, and eight grandchildren.
