Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, and based on Polish video game developer CD Projekt Red’s best-selling action-adventure role-playing game that stars Keanu Reeves as Samurai band leader Johnny Silverhand, a mercenary in a tech-obsessed world.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce alongside the Poland-based franchise rights holder. Cyberpunk 2077, which has sold more than 40 million copies, is an open-world action-adventure set in Night City, a megalopolis driven by power, glamour and body modification.

In the game, a mercenary outlaw named V is on the search for a one-of-a-kind implant that doubles as a key to immortality. The game, whose knock-down, drag-out gunfights recall another first-person RPG, Call of Duty, drew a lot of initial buzz over the character Johnny Silverhand played by Reeves.

An expansion of the Cyberpunk 2077 game, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, has sold 15 million copies and stars Idris Elba as sleeper agent Solomon Reed. Projekt Red is also behind Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the Netflix series also set in the Night City dystopia and which followed the bow of Cyberpunk 2077.

Edgerunners was animated by popular Japanese anime studio Studio Trigger and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, the team behind such series as Kill la Kill and Star Wars: Visions. Hollywood has developed a steady appetite for video game adaptations, especially on streaming platforms, after the success of HBO’s The Last of Us, a small-screen version of the 2013 action-adventure game from Naughty Dog and Sony, created by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, one of the game’s original directors.
