Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) on Monday called Republicans “very performative,” saying that many GOP lawmakers have distaste for President Trump.
“We have, like, our own little back rooms, right? So every once in a while, they will be like, ‘Hey, you can come to our, like, back room?’ You know?’” Crockett said on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday, describing House Republicans. “So, they’ll invite me for stuff. They also do things like, ‘You want to, like, get into a fight so we can go on Fox News?’ And I’m like, ‘I’ma pass.’”
“I mean, like, literally, Republicans are very performative, specifically in this moment, right? Like, a lot of them don’t like Donald Trump, but they too afraid to say so. So, you know, in general, they’re just like, ‘I gotta do what I gotta do to stay in this seat and to keep my family away from all the minions that may come after them if I go against Trump,’” she added.
Crockett’s comments come amid rocky political territory for the GOP and Trump as they head into the midterms, with the war in Iran viewed negatively by most Americans, concerns about the Trump administration’s handling of the economy and recent Democratic electoral wins.
According to a polling average from Decision Desk HQ, Trump’s approval rating was sitting at 39.9 percent midday Tuesday and his disapproval rating was at 57.3 percent.
Senate Republicans, who hope to maintain control of the upper chamber following this year’s midterm elections, recently said that they saw Trump as an increasing political liability. The GOP senators pointed to Trump’s multiple attacks on their ability to govern and his reluctance to drop a proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund for MAGA allies.
