A Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 345 people across 27 states has been linked to jalapeño peppers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Wednesday.
Traceback information found that the affected jalapeños came from Sinaloa, Mexico, and were distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. There have been no reported deaths and 36 hospitalizations so far, the CDC said. Illnesses began between June 19 and July 20.
The news of the outbreak pushed Chipotle and Qdoba to stop serving the peppers. The CDC stated that the two chains are not a risk to consumers at this time, but the Food and Drug Administration is working to trace if affected products were sent to grocery stores.
The CDC recommends avoiding recalled products and washing and sanitizing any surfaces that may have come in contact. Symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.
This outbreak comes amid a separate Salmonella outbreak linked to white and cage-free brown eggs. It has affected 17 states, with 98 reported illnesses and 26 hospitalizations. The source was traced back to an egg producer in Texas, which also has the most reported cases, but people have gotten sick in states as far away as Michigan and New York.
