Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who recently lost a primary for his seat, said in a new interview that President Trump occasionally treats the legislative branch as “merely an appendage.”
Cassidy told CBS News’s Margaret Brennan in the interview, aired on Sunday on “Face the Nation,” that “the Senate is a separate body, separate from the presidency.”
“I think we’re seeing that,” he added.
“Do you think the president understands that?” Brennan asked Cassidy.
“I don’t know if the president does. Sometimes he acts as if Congress is merely an appendage, and frankly, sometimes Congress acts like it’s an appendage,” the Louisiana senator replied.
Cassidy, who voted to convict Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack, has been at odds with the president recently. Last week, Trump blew up at Cassidy in a closed-door meeting at the Capitol after the Pelican State senator alleged the president was not being forthright with the American people about the Iran war.
The argument between the two got so loud and intense that a senator near Cassidy had to pull him back down to his seat. Tensions erupted when the president expressed his frustration over the Senate backing a war powers resolution last Tuesday; the resolution directed him to remove U.S. troops from fighting against Iran, with four Republicans, including Cassidy, voting in its favor.
In May, Cassidy did not advance to the runoff in Louisiana’s GOP Senate primary, ending his reelection bid after years of political turmoil stemming from his vote to convict Trump.
“Congress wants to be read in, and Congress has our rules and procedures that our Founding Fathers set up, and they set it up precisely so that there would not be too powerful of an institution of a presidency designed to reflect all of the American people, not just the will of one person,” Cassidy said in his interview with Brennan.
