Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) punched back at President Trump on Monday after Trump called out Cassidy and other GOP senators for not supporting the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, even though Cassidy has consistently voted for the bill.
Cassidy took a shot at Trump’s staff for having “misled” the president after Trump lumped the Louisiana senator in with four other GOP senators who have voted against the legislation: Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Thom Tillis (N.C.) and Mitch McConnell (Ky.).
“Mr. President, I don’t know which version of the SAVE America Act you’re referring to, but I am a cosponsor and support the latest version. I don’t know which staffer misled you, but thank you for your attention to this matter!!” Cassidy wrote on social media.
Cassidy shot off his response after Trump bashed Democrats and a handful of Senate Republicans for blocking his No. 1 legislative priority.
“In light of the tremendous loss in the Supreme Court today concerning Voter’s Rights, and the fact that ‘people’s’ votes are allowed to be counted LONG AFTER an Election is over, it is more important than ever to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“All Dumocrats and our five Republican Senate Hold Outs, Lisa Murkowksi, Susan Collins, Thom Tillis, Bill Cassidy and Mitch McConnell must vote to SAVE OUR COUNTRY. There can be no more excuses,” the president wrote.
Cassidy recently voted for two amendments to the budget reconciliation package sponsored by Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and Mike Lee (Utah) to adopt the SAVE America Act.
Graham’s amendment reflected Trump’s preferred version of the bill, which includes major restrictions on mail-in balloting and a prohibition on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports as well as a ban on transgender surgery for minors.
Lee’s amendment reflected the latest version of the SAVE America Act passed by the House.
Cassidy also slammed Trump for refusing to sign into law a housing affordability bill that passed by huge majorities in both chambers because the president is upset with Congress about not passing the SAVE America Act.
“Btw, it’s irresponsible to postpone signing the Housing bill due to the SAVE Act. We need to start delivering relief to people for the high cost of housing ASAP!!” Cassidy wrote on social media.
