Democratic strategist James Carville said he is backing Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in spite of his criticism of El-Sayed and especially when compared to the Republican in the race.
“El-Sayed himself has said the Democrats is as much of a problem as the Republicans, which I disagree with. But when I look at him and I look at Mike Rogers, who’s a lackey for the entire pharmaceutical industry, who’s an election denier, then I’m going to take El-Sayed every time,” Carville told Piers Morgan on his “Piers Morgan Uncensored” show in a clip posted Monday.
Former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) will face El-Sayed in the November midterm election.
“Would I take him in a vacuum? Probably not. But against a clown like Rogers, who is an election denier running for the United States in the year 2026, who has never at once supposed the interest of big pharma? Yeah, I’m gonna be for El-Sayed.”
Earlier this month, Carville went after left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, who has campaigned with El-Sayed, saying if the streamer becomes a force within the Democratic Party, “I’m out of here.”
El-Sayed responded to Carville’s comments on Piker’s stream, saying, “Part of me is like, why does anybody still listen to James Carville?”
“He said one smart thing once, which he seems to have forgotten, which is, ‘It’s the economy, stupid,’” he added.
Progressive insurgents, like El-Sayed, and democratic socialists have seen success this primary season across the U.S., from New York to Colorado. Their ascendancy has also sparked debate about how far left the Democratic Party should lean.
Carville has alleged that the progressive left wing of the Democratic Party is “too hotheaded to know that they’re not popular.”
Following his win in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary, El-Sayed quickly went after Rogers by saying the former House member is a carpetbagger and “corporate sellout.”
“Mike’s a guy who spent 14 years in Congress with one goal: to figure out how to cash out the day he left,” El-Sayed said last Wednesday. “And guess what he did? As soon as he left Congress, after having taken corporate check after corporate check after corporate check to empower the corporations to pick your pockets, he went and he cashed out.”
The Hill has reached out to Rogers’s campaign for comment.
