AFP via Getty Images The Cannes Film Festival got off the ground in the French Riviera resort town on Tuesday, bringing the traditional mix of stars and international auteurs to the Croisette. This year will see fewer big American movies, but stars including Scarlett Johansson, Rami Malek, Javier Bardem, Isabelle Huppert, Catherine Deneuve, Sebastian Stan, Charles Melton and Sandra Hüller are expected, while the festival jury boasts Demi Moore and Ruth Negga.
“Lord of the Rings” helmer Peter Jackson received an honorary Palme d’Or at the opening ceremony, presented by Elijah Wood.
Anticipated international auteurs include Pedro Almodovar, James Gray, Christin Mungiu, Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Diego Luna. The 79th Cannes Film Festival runs to May 23.
