Paris St-Germain are the second team to win back-to-back Champions League trophies

Paris St-Germain aim to start their season as they hope to end it - by winning a European trophy.

The back-to-back European champions could become only the second team to win three consecutive Champions Leagues this season.

But first the focus is on the Uefa Super Cup against Europa League winners Aston Villa in Salzburg on Wednesday (20:00 BST).

BBC Sport looks at how PSG are shaping up this season.

Can they make history?

After years and years of failure and billions of pounds spent, Paris St-Germain finally won the Champions League in 2025.

And then they became one of only two teams to win consecutive Champions League trophies.

They hammered Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich in 2025 and then beat Arsenal on penalties in Budapest this year.

Only Real Madrid had won the Champions League back-to-back before - winning three in a row from 2016 to 2018.

It is something even the great teams like Pep Guardiola's Barcelona or Manchester City, or Alex Ferguson's Manchester United, or various Bayern Munich sides have not done.

Joining Real on three is the aim for Luis Enrique's side this season.

Going back to the start, only three other teams have managed to win three consecutive European Cups - Real Madrid, who won the first five from 1956 to 1960, and Ajax and Bayern Munich both in the 1970s.

In fact if you stretch it out to three European Cups in five years you would only have to add Liverpool (1977, 1978, 1981) to that list.

Could PSG make history with clean sweep?

Paris St-Germain will play in six competitions this season (three of them being one-off finals) - and will be favourites to win each of them.

They are the Uefa Super Cup, Trophee des Champions (France's Community Shield), the Champions League, Ligue 1, the French Cup and the Fifa Intercontinental Cup.

Last season they won a joint record five, only failing in the French Cup where they lost to neighbours Paris FC in January. The season before they won four trophies.

No major team have ever won six pieces of silverware in a season before.

Away from PSG the record is Celtic's five in 1966-67 (including the Glasgow Cup), while several teams have won four - including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Manchester City.

Another slow start for PSG?

PSG may take some time to get into full flow this season, having had 16 players at the World Cup.

Six were involved until the final weekend - five for France and Fabian Ruiz for winners Spain.

Eight of their players scored at least one goal - which is a record for one club at a World Cup.

There are only 24 days between the World Cup final and the Uefa Super Cup - so some players will be far from rested.

It was not much better last season when they only had a month between the Club World Cup final, which came at the end of 2025-26 (losing to Chelsea), and the Super Cup.

In the Super Cup they came from 2-0 down to beat Tottenham on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

And they have been slow starters in the Champions League recently - needing a knockout phase play-off tie after failing to finish in the top eight both times - before finishing strongly to win.

Have they made many changes?

PSG have had a consistent team over the past two seasons.

In fact they started the same 10 outfield players in both Champions League finals - with only the goalkeeper changing.

And those 10 players remain at the club.

Their summer signings so far have been Monaco midfielder Maghnes Akliouche, Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne and 18-year-old Milan goalkeeper Alessandro Longoni.

The only departures so far have been Lee Kang-in to Atletico Madrid and Goncalo Ramos to AC Milan.

Bradley Barcola could join Liverpool in a deal worth about £100m.

All three were substitutes in the Champions League final.

PSG had tried to sign Leipzig and Ivory Coast forward Yan Diomande but had a bid of £102.5m rejected - and he went to Real Madrid instead for up to £120m.

Their focus now appears to be on Barcelona's Ferran Torres, who scored the only goal for Spain against Argentina in the World Cup final.
