Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, seen as potential a 2028 presidential hopeful, said Sunday that there is a “carnival of corruption” in Washington, D.C.

“Right now, what’s at stake is nothing less than the American Dream. It is endangered. If you were born the year that my mother was born, at the end of World War II, there is a 90 percent chance that you would come out ahead and live better than how you were born. If you were born when I was, in the early ’80s, it’s a coin flip, 50-50, and headed in the wrong direction,” Buttigieg said at a rally in Iowa on Sunday.

“So what’s it going to be for your kids, for my kids? That’s up to us. And it starts with admitting that our economy is unfair because our politics is unfair. You can see it in the carnival of corruption that is Washington D.C., today,” he added.

Buttigieg, once a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 and later the leader of the Department of Transportation under former President Biden, then proceeded to take swipes at Congress and President Trump.

“Corporate dark money flowing into campaigns everywhere we look. Congressmen trading stocks while they take votes that move markets. The leader of the free world flying around in a second-hand jumbo jet from a foreign country while he makes a billion dollars on crypto deals propped up by foreign leaders,” he said.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.

Buttigieg’s focus on the economy in his comments follows Americans expressing their concerns around economic conditions and a distaste for Trump in recent polling — two issues Democrats are hoping will help them secure wins in the upcoming midterms this fall.

The former Transportation secretary has recently emerged as one of his party’s most prominent messengers, making stops in battleground districts, going to red states and making consistent television appearances.
