Former President Biden late Saturday slammed President Trump over his Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and other Washington renovation projects in a rare public appearance.
“It’s not just his vanity projects,” Biden said in remarks at a Saturday night gala hosted by the Maryland Democratic Party. “He’s tearing down the East Wing of the White House, making room for his ballroom. Putting his name on the Kennedy Center. Building an arch in his own honor. Even hiring his own pool guy to fix his Reflecting Pool.
“Whoa, what a loser.”
Trump’s efforts to renovate the Reflecting Pool have not gone smoothly, as officials have battled an algae bloom and alleged vandalism since the site was repainted and repaired. Other Trump administration beautification projects include a $600 million White House ballroom being built on the site of the East Room and plans to build a triumphal arch in the president’s name.
Trump’s name was also added to the Kennedy Center exterior before it was removed after a federal judge’s order.
“Now folks, it’s not just that,” Biden said on Saturday. “The Reflecting Pool reflects something even worse than the narcissism and incompetence at the core of this administration. It’s the corruption, the brazen, blatant corruption. Corruption on a scale never seen before in American history in any administration.
“Trump has made billions of dollars since his return to the White House,” he added. “It’s simply stunning to me. He has no shame. And frankly, it’s embarrassing to the country. But Trump could care less. Making money off the presidency is one of the reasons he wants to be president.”
The former president has made fewer public appearances as he battles an aggressive form of prostate cancer since leaving office. After Trump’s record-length State of the Union address in February, Biden jokingly asked if his successor was “still talking” days later in remarks at a party in South Carolina.
Biden was more serious in his criticism of Trump in October, during a speech that marked his first public comments since he completed a round of radiation treatment.
“Friends, I can’t sugarcoat any of this. These are dark days,” Biden said at the time.
Americans, however, appear to hold a slightly more favorable opinion of Trump than Biden, according to at least one recent poll.
The CNN survey released earlier in June found that 57 percent of Americans have a favorable view of former President Obama, compared with 34 percent who hold a favorable view of Trump and 30 percent for Biden.
