Anthony Bourdain’s ‘Get Jiro’ Lands Premiere Date and Bloody Trailer From DC Studios (Exclusive)

Get Jiro is ready to cook up thrills with an adaptation of the late Anthony Bourdain‘s work.

The forthcoming animated series is set to premiere on Adult Swim on Oct. 3 as part of the Toonami anime and action block, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. It premieres late on Oct. 3 at midnight and streams the following day via HBO Max. The violent first trailer is exclusive to THR and can be seen below, with the title character revealing just how much he despises soy sauce.

Hailing from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios, the animated half-hour project is based on the New York Times best-selling DC/Vertigo graphic novels written by famed chef and TV personality Bourdain and Joel Rose. Langdon Foss and Alé Garza handled the artwork.

Set in the near future, the show centers on a mysterious, revenge-focused sushi chef named Jiro in a version of Los Angeles where customers resort to murder to secure a table at coveted restaurants. Get Jiro was developed by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, who co-wrote the A24 feature Sharper and served as producers on NBC’s comedy series Superstore. Bourdain and Rose’s first graphic novel in the franchise was published in 2012.

Brian Tee (Chicago Med) voices Jiro, while other castmembers include Titus Welliver (Bosch: Legacy), Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Justin Kirk (Weeds). Tanaka, Gatewood, Jordan Blum and Sam Register serve as executive producers.

“We at Adult Swim were huge fans of Bourdain and Rose’s graphic novels, so when our partners at WBA first mentioned it, we were all in,” says Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen. “Like everything Bourdain did, this story starts with food and then generously reaches out into all directions to cover culture, obsession and what makes humanity problematic but, in the end, inspiring. What you get is a wildly original, cinematic series, the kind of thing that we feel is right at home on Adult Swim.”

The impact of Bourdain, who died in 2018 at age 61, continues to be felt on the big and small screens alike. His early restaurant job as a teen on Cape Cod is the focus of the A24 feature Tony, which is currently in theaters and stars Dominic Sessa as the 19-year-old chef-to-be.
