U2 guitarist Dave Evans, known as The Edge, waves to fans outside the Metropolitan Palace during the second day of recording of its music video in downtown Mexico City on May 13, 2026. Alfredo ESTRELLA/AFP via Getty Images Andy Richter, who had a small role in the 2003 Christmas classic Elf, revealed in a new interview that U2’s the Edge wrote a screenplay for the sequel to the Will Ferrell-starring film.
For over two decades, Elf fans have clamored for a sequel to the film, and while an Elf 2 came close to happening in 2013, Ferrell ultimately decided against reprising the role of Buddy.
At some point after the film’s release and rise to holiday favorite, as Richter told Obsessed: The Podcast, Elf producer Shauna Robertson received a phone call from an unlikely screenwriter pitching a meeting about Elf 2.
“Somebody reached out to her and said, ‘The Edge from U2 has written a sequel to Elf, and he wants to talk to you about it,’” Richter said. “It’s the weirdest story, but apparently it was fully written somewhere in the world. There is an Edge-penned Elf 2 out there.”
Richter added that the meeting “never happened.” “It’s one of those things where she’s like, ‘All right, sure, I’ll meet him,’ and then it just petered out and never happened,” Richter said.
