(NEXSTAR) – Florida’s Palm Beach International Airport is expected to officially adopt a new name, “President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” on July 9, according to the airport’s website.

If carried out next month, the change will take effect more than four months since Florida’s legislature passed a bill to rename the Palm Beach facility for Trump, and just over three months since Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed it into law.

Airport officials at PBI (or DJT, as of next month) say the name change won’t affect any of its “customer-facing operations,” but the renaming has already prompted backlash. Florida Rep. Lois Frankel (D), whose district includes Palm Beach, issued a statement in February calling the decision “misguided and unfair,” claiming the state’s lawmakers “ignored” locals who opposed the change.

“Decisions about naming major infrastructure should wait until after an honoree’s service has concluded — and should include meaningful input from local residents and communities most directly affected,” Frankel said.

A representative for PBI further told Nexstar that airport officials have received feedback reflecting “a range of viewpoints” concerning the airport’s name change.

“Because the decision was made at the state level, we are not able to make changes in response; however, we appreciate hearing from the community,” the airport rep said.

Palm Beach County commissioners, in May 2026, also narrowly approved a licensing deal with the president’s intellectual property company over the use of the “Donald J. Trump” name, after the Trump Organization in February filed a trademark for its use at airports, specifically. The Trump Organization has previously said that the president and his family will not seek to profit from any such licensing agreements, but only wished to protect against “bad actors,” the company told the Associated Press.

The White House, meanwhile, has celebrated news of the “President Donald J. Trump International Airport” coming to fruition. Eric Trump later shared what appeared to be the airport’s new logo last month.

“There is no person more deserving of this incredible honor than @realDonaldTrump,” Eric Trump wrote on social media. “Congratulations Dad!”

Controversy aside, Donald Trump is far from the first president to be honored with his name on a U.S. airport. There are currently 12 such airports scattered across the country, all but one of which are named for now-deceased presidents.

  • John F. Kennedy International Airport (New York, New York) Originally named New York International Airport (and commonly referred to as Idlewild Airport), the facility was renamed for JFK in 1963, just a month after his assassination.
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (Houston, Texas) Previously known as Houston Municipal Airport, Howard Hughes Municipal Airport and Houston International Airport, the George Bush Intercontinental Airport was renamed to honor George H.W. Bush in 1997.
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (Arlington County, Virginia) The D.C.-area airport, previously known just as Washington National Airport, was renamed for Ronald Reagan in 1998.
  • Gerald R. Ford International Airport (Grand Rapids, Michigan) The Kent County International Airport (previously known as the Kent County Airport) was renamed in 1999 after Gerald Ford, who was raised in Grand Rapids and began his political career in the region.
  • Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (Sangamon County, Illinois) Previously just the Capital Airport, the facility was renamed for Abraham Lincoln in 2004.
  • Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (Little Rock, Arkansas) The only airport currently named for a living president, the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (often just called the Clinton National Airport) was renamed for Bill and Hillary Clinton in 2012.
  • Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (Wichita, Kansas) Formerly known as the Wichita Municipal Airport and the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport, the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport transitioned to its current name between 2014 and 2015.
  • Dickinson Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport (Dickinson, North Dakota) The Dickinson Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport, formerly known as the Dickinson Airport or the Dickinson Municipal Airport, began operating under its current name in 2004, a communications manager for the airport confirmed.
  • John F. Kennedy Memorial Airport (Ashland County, Wisconsin) A public-use airport in northern Wisconsin is also named for JFK, who gave a speech at the facility in 1963 and lauded the region’s conservation efforts in the Apostle Islands.
  • Jimmy Carter Regional Airport (Sumter County, Georgia) Formerly named Souther Field after Army aircraft engineer Henry Souther, the public airport was renamed in 2009 for Jimmy Carter. Carter had lived in the nearby city of Plains, where he was born and ultimately died.
  • Roosevelt Memorial Airport (Meriwether County, Georgia) Franklin Delano Roosevelt himself dedicated this airport, near Warm Springs, Georgia, in 1932, shortly before becoming president. Roosevelt had previously sought treatment for polio in the area, where he built a residence that would later become known as “The Little White House” during his presidency.
  • Harry S. Truman Regional Airport (Lafayette County, Missouri) A small public-use airfield (with a gravel runway) in Clay Township, Missouri, is named for Harry S. Truman, the only president to come from the state.
