A new report released on Tuesday found that 12 percent of successful scams last year involved artificial intelligence or deepfakes

The analysis, which was conducted jointly by Gallup and the Stop Scams Alliance, acknowledged that this reported number could be lower than the reality, as the use of AI or deepfakes can be difficult to detect. Older adults are historically more likely to fall victim to scams and may be at an even greater risk for failing to detect AI or deepfake fraud schemes.

An AARP report published earlier this year warned that AI development has enabled the increased sophistication of scams and that nearly 90 percent of older adults are concerned about AI-enabled fraud schemes.

The FBI said last fall that its Internet Crime Complaint Center received over double the number of complaints about deepfake AI videos by September 2025 than it had in the same time frame in 2024.

Additionally, the Stop Scam Alliance-Gallup analysis found that 15.1 million Americans — or 6 percent of all U.S. adults — were victimized in scams in 2025. An estimated total of $68 billion was lost to scams, according to the report.

Fraudulent websites were the most common type of scam, with 40 percent of scamming victims reporting that their incident involved websites that collected financial or personal information. The next-most likely fraud schemes were advance payment scams or fake investment opportunities.

The Stop Scams Alliance-Gallup report relied on a survey conducted by Gallup between Jan. 8 and Feb. 18 among a sample of 5,173 U.S. adults. The margin of error for these results is approximately 1.6 percentage points.
