DC’s Absolute Batman, already a publishing sensation, is now poised to take over the brick building and video game realms.

The Absolute incarnations of Batman and Catwoman, seen in the comic book by writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta, have become the latest characters gamers can play in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, a new open world action-adventure video game that debuts May 19 for the early access crowd and May 22 for the general launch. While the Absolute characters are starting to appear on apparel and action figures are available to pre-order, this marks the first time the characters will be seen in screen form beyond the pages of the comic books. And it presages an expansion to come.

The game is made in partnership between TT Games, creators of the best-selling Lego games series, including Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and Warner Bros. Games. It invites players to embark on Bruce Wayne’s journey to become the hero of Gotham City, inspired by decades of Batman films, television shows, comic books, and games, combined with DC lore and fun-filled LEGO humor.

The game allows players to choose different skins for Batman, as well as Catwoman and other characters, from various points in the Dark Knight’s media history.

The addition of Absolute Batman and Absolute Catwoman, only created in late 2024 with the launch of the Absolute comics line, is a testament to the popularity of the comic and that version of the characters. The Absolute comics, which reimagine DC’s key characters such Superman and Wonder Woman for a more modern audiences, have sold almost 12 million units since the line’s launch, with Absolute Batman accounting for roughly a third of the sales. The comics have also powered DC to overtake Marvel in market share for the first time this century.

“As a longtime, diehard fan of the Lego videogames, I’m so thrilled and honored to see Absolute Batman and Absolute Catwoman included in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight (alongside so many other amazing iterations)!” Snyder said in a statement. “I can’t wait for fans to see Absolute Bruce brought to life as only Lego games can!”

Warner Bros. Games on Wednesday revealed a hype video of Snyder playing and reacting to a demo of the game.

Dragotta was equally enthusiastic. “So cool to see Absolute Batman and Absolute Catwoman be a part of the new Lego Batman videogame and join the legacy,” the artist stated. “Now we know where this bat brickhouse gets his bricks!”

Warner Bros. Games also offered a peek on the suit selector function.

The game promises combat styles with fluid attack chains, over-the-top takedowns, and powerful gadgets, among them Batarangs and the Batclaw, grapple launchers, the Batglider, and let’s not forget a range of Batmobiles and Batcycles.  (Other characters have their own gear, so look out for Jim Gordon’s foam sprayer, Robin’s cable launcher, Nightwing’s battle staff, Batgirl’s hackarang, and Catwoman’s whip.)

And there’s the whole world of Gotham City to explore, with locations such as Ace Chemicals, Gotham Botanical Gardens, Wayne Tower, and Arkham Asylum, among the settings. And yes, there is also the Batcave, where players can display their trophies and rewards.

The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), and down the line, on Nintendo Switch 2. The game is rated everyone 10 and older.
