A majority of Americans anticipate that the Iran war will stretch on amid renewed military operations between the U.S. and Tehran, according to polling released on Monday.

The Reuters survey found that 79 percent of respondents believe the U.S. military will remain engaged in the conflict for “an extended period of time,” which is a significant jump from the 65 percent who said the same in a March poll.

Eighteen percent of respondents said they believe the war will “end pretty quickly in a matter of weeks.”

The survey displayed some splits along party lines, with 91 percent of Democrats and 69 percent of Republicans saying they expect the conflict to stretch on. Additionally, only 37 percent of respondents said they approved of the U.S. military’s strikes against Iran.

The polling follows fresh strikes in the Middle East in the past week over alleged infractions of a ceasefire agreement signed by the U.S. and Tehran last month.

The Iranian and U.S. militaries exchanged fire early Tuesday morning after President Trump announced the military would “immediately” reimpose its naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and start charging a 20 percent toll on vessels traveling through the critical trading passage.

“The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as ‘THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,’ but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security to this very volatile section of the World,” he wrote on Truth Social. “The process and formation will begin immediately.”

The president reversed course on the new toll in a Tuesday morning Truth Social post, saying his administration would replace the fee with trade and investment deals in the Gulf.

“Those Investments will be MASSIVE but, at the same time, extraordinarily good for them, and their future,” he wrote.

The Reuters poll surveyed a total of 1,019 U.S. adults from July 10-12 with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
