From the No. 1 overall pick to Mr. Irrelevant, here's how every team builds its 2026 class
The 2026 NFL Draft is three weeks away, but fans do not have to wait that long to see how it may play out. In this thought exercise, I explored a potential surprise in the top 10 as part of a seven-round projection.
There has been plenty of debate about whether this is a bad draft. It is deep but lacks All-Pro caliber prospects, and several players who possess that talent play positions not often selected in the top 10. The actual draft will likely unfold much differently than consensus boards and mock drafts suggest. As a result, fans should not get hung up on who their favorite team bypasses. The three-day event will be an opportunity for teams to find starters and quality depth into Day 3.
As a reminder, five teams are without a first-round selection: the Jaguars, Falcons, Colts, Packers and Broncos.
Without further ado, let's kick this off!
The 2026 NFL Draft will take place April 23-25 in Pittsburgh. You can find more draft coverage at CBSSports.com, including weekly mock drafts and regular evaluations of the top prospects.
NFL Mock DraftRound 1 Round 1 - Pick 1
Fernando Mendoza QB Indiana • Jr • 6'5" / 236 lbs Projected Team Las Vegas PROSPECT RNK 1st POSITION RNK 1st PAYDS 3349 RUYDS 284 INTS 6 TDS 47 No one is considering alternatives for Las Vegas. The Tyler Linderbaum signing supports the assumption that Fernando Mendoza will be the No. 1 overall pick, as a veteran center is a major benefit for a young quarterback. The Raiders need a quarterback, and there is a player worthy of that selection. Round 1 - Pick 2
Arvell Reese EDGE Ohio State • Jr • 6'4" / 243 lbs Projected Team N.Y. Jets PROSPECT RNK 3rd POSITION RNK 2nd I've gone back and forth on how the Jets may view this selection. Would Aaron Glenn want a player seen as more of a finished product (David Bailey) or one with more upside (Arvell Reese)? Some of the signings in free agency take the pressure off Reese contributing immediately, which makes the upside play easier to justify. Round 1 - Pick 3
Sonny Styles LB Ohio State • Sr • 6'5" / 243 lbs Projected Team Arizona PROSPECT RNK 10th POSITION RNK 1st Linebacker is not a premium position, but Sonny Styles is one of the best talents in this draft. Offensive line is arguably the biggest need, but there is no point in reaching for a lesser player just to fill it. A linebacker has not been taken in the top 10 since Isaiah Simmons, Devin White and Devin Bush were selected over a two-year span from 2019-20 -- not exactly a ringing endorsement for the concept. Round 1 - Pick 4
David Bailey EDGE Texas Tech • Sr • 6'4" / 250 lbs Projected Team Tennessee PROSPECT RNK 19th POSITION RNK 3rd Robert Saleh adds more energy and twitch to the pass rush in the form of David Bailey. A Stanford transfer, he was one of the most improved prospects in college football this season. Jermaine Johnson II is more adept at setting the edge against the run and serves as a strong complementary piece to Bailey. Round 1 - Pick 5
Jermod McCoy CB Tennessee • Jr • 6'1" / 188 lbs Projected Team N.Y. Giants PROSPECT RNK 9th POSITION RNK 1st Jermod McCoy is not a prospect I have associated with New York during this process, but every year there are a few picks that make you think, "Why didn't I think of that?" I refer to mock drafts as thought exercises because the goal is to be most accurate with the final version. McCoy has the potential to be in a tier of cornerbacks that includes Derek Stingley Jr. and Patrick Surtain II. Stingley did not play his final season of college football, either. Why not Mansoor Delane? Delane is more of a zone-heavy corner, and the Ravens have played the fifth-lowest rate of zone coverage over the past decade. The other consideration was Ohio State receiver Carnell Tate. Round 1 - Pick 6
Carnell Tate WR Ohio State • Jr • 6'2" / 192 lbs Projected Team Cleveland PROSPECT RNK 8th POSITION RNK 2nd REC 51 REYDS 875 YDS/REC 17.2 TDS 9 Offensive tackle and wide receiver have been the two primary considerations for the Browns in the first round. A viable left tackle option likely does not come into play unless the team trades back, in my opinion. Carnell Tate is a better receiver prospect than any of the left tackles at their respective positions. When in doubt, draft an Ohio State receiver. Round 1 - Pick 7
Jeremiyah Love RB Notre Dame • Jr • 6'0" / 214 lbs Projected Team Washington PROSPECT RNK 16th POSITION RNK 1st RUYDS 1372 YDS/ATT 6.9 REYDS 280 TDS 21 Washington first signed Austin Ekeler and then approached the position à la carte -- a little bit of this, a little bit of that to fill the room. Jeremiyah Love is the full menu, and he would take a lot of pressure off Jayden Daniels. Running back is a need, and options are limited in this draft class. Round 1 - Pick 8
Rueben Bain Jr. EDGE Miami (Fla.) • Jr • 6'2" / 263 lbs Projected Team New Orleans PROSPECT RNK 2nd POSITION RNK 1st It seems as though Cam Jordan will not return to New Orleans as the team ushers in a new era. Chase Young is there, but the team could use another pass rusher. Rueben Bain Jr. is an incredibly powerful rusher who would be a complementary piece in any pass rush while also setting the edge at a high level. Round 1 - Pick 9
Francis Mauigoa OT Miami (Fla.) • Jr • 6'6" / 329 lbs Projected Team Kansas City PROSPECT RNK 20th POSITION RNK 4th Kansas City is rarely in a position to draft in the top 10. The idea of allowing Jaylon Moore and Wanya Morris to compete for the starting spot and hoping it works out is a risky venture, given their struggles to find a long-term answer at left tackle. The Chiefs take the first lineman off the board, landing a plug-and-play right tackle to replace Jawaan Taylor. Round 1 - Pick 10
Caleb Downs S Ohio State • Jr • 6'0" / 205 lbs Projected Team Cincinnati PROSPECT RNK 7th POSITION RNK 1st Why would Caleb Downs be available if he is one of the best prospects in this class? First, positional value. A true safety has not been drafted in the top 10 since Jamal Adams went No. 6 overall in 2017. Perhaps the best comparison to Downs in terms of mental acumen is Minkah Fitzpatrick, who went No. 11 overall. Round 1 - Pick 11
Mansoor Delane CB LSU • Sr • 6'0" / 187 lbs Projected Team Miami PROSPECT RNK 12th POSITION RNK 3rd Cornerback is a need for Miami, and Mansoor Delane is also a strong scheme fit. Green Bay, the former home of new head coach Jeff Hafley, played the seventh-most zone coverage last season, which is where Delane is at his best. His ceiling is not as high as Jermod McCoy's, but this is a relatively safe pick to open a new era in Miami. Round 1 - Pick 12
Makai Lemon WR USC • Jr • 5'11" / 192 lbs Projected Team Dallas PROSPECT RNK 18th POSITION RNK 4th REC 79 REYDS 1156 YDS/REC 14.6 TDS 13 I have maintained all offseason that Dallas is operating as if it has to maximize the 2026 season because of the blowback from the Micah Parsons trade and an overall underwhelming recent history of results. Who would be more impactful in this range than Makai Lemon? The list is probably pretty small. A third receiver may seem like a luxury, but it gives the team insurance while also providing an off-ramp when it inevitably has to choose between George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb. From Atlanta Falcons Round 1 - Pick 13
Spencer Fano OT Utah • Jr • 6'6" / 311 lbs Projected Team L.A. Rams PROSPECT RNK 5th POSITION RNK 2nd There is not a position Los Angeles has to address in the first round. The Rams could take their chances with Warren McClendon at right tackle, but Spencer Fano is too talented for them to feel as though they have to go down that path. They could also tap into the depth at receiver in this draft class on Day 2. Round 1 - Pick 14
Kenyon Sadiq TE Oregon • Jr • 6'3" / 241 lbs Projected Team Baltimore PROSPECT RNK 29th POSITION RNK 1st REC 51 REYDS 560 YDS/REC 11 TDS 8 Mark Andrews turns 31 in September. Baltimore lost Charlie Kolar and Isaiah Likely in free agency. Chicago, under Declan Doyle, had at least two tight ends on the field for 45.4% of its plays, according to TruMedia. Kenyon Sadiq is both the present and the future at the position in Baltimore. Round 1 - Pick 15
Olaivavega Ioane IOL Penn State • Jr • 6'4" / 323 lbs Projected Team Tampa Bay PROSPECT RNK 15th POSITION RNK 1st Tampa Bay has dealt with injuries along the offensive line and can fortify that unit with the addition of a strong, physical player. Vega Ioane profiles as a relatively safe pick in the first round, but the Buccaneers may also consider edge help. From Indianapolis Colts Round 1 - Pick 16
Jordyn Tyson WR Arizona State • Jr • 6'2" / 203 lbs Projected Team N.Y. Jets PROSPECT RNK 6th POSITION RNK 1st REC 61 REYDS 711 YDS/REC 11.7 TDS 9 Stocking the receiver room with players who have battled injuries is a precarious form of roster-building, but Jordyn Tyson is a top-10 prospect in this class, in my opinion. If the Jets can keep him healthy, they will have an elite, flexible unit. Round 1 - Pick 17
Monroe Freeling OT Georgia • Jr • 6'7" / 315 lbs Projected Team Detroit PROSPECT RNK 52nd POSITION RNK 7th Dan Campbell has expressed the possibility of moving Penei Sewell from right tackle to left, just as Tampa Bay did with Tristan Wirfs. His response, however, left the door open for the team to draft a left tackle and keep Sewell on the right side, which is how this scenario plays out. Round 1 - Pick 18
Dillon Thieneman S Oregon • Soph • 6'0" / 201 lbs Projected Team Minnesota PROSPECT RNK 35th POSITION RNK 3rd Safety may not be the highest priority, but it is a need for Minnesota. NFL teams salivate over prospects with ball production and premium athletic traits; Dillon Thieneman checks both boxes. It is difficult to envision him lasting much longer than this point in the first round. Round 1 - Pick 19
Avieon Terrell CB Clemson • Jr • 5'11" / 180 lbs Projected Team Carolina PROSPECT RNK 11th POSITION RNK 2nd Carolina continues stockpiling defensive talent. After signing edge rusher Jaelan Phillips and Devin Lloyd, the Panthers address the secondary with Aveion Terrell, who has the versatility to play inside or out. From Green Bay Packers Round 1 - Pick 20
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren S Toledo • Sr • 6'4" / 202 lbs Projected Team Dallas PROSPECT RNK 28th POSITION RNK 2nd Dallas overhauls the safety room with the signing of Jalen Thompson and the drafting of Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, who did not test as well as Dillon Thieneman but is a better player right now, in my opinion. McNeil-Warren has an instinctual approach to the game and is not afraid to be physical. Round 1 - Pick 21
Kadyn Proctor OT Alabama • Jr • 6'7" / 352 lbs Projected Team Pittsburgh PROSPECT RNK 4th POSITION RNK 1st Pittsburgh is not going to find a viable linebacker at this point. The team could consider a quarterback here but may feel burned by how the Kenny Pickett situation played out. Mike McCarthy has a history of drafting and sitting young quarterbacks, though. As it stands, the Steelers address a glaring need at offensive tackle by replacing the player who replaced Dan Moore Jr. Round 1 - Pick 22
Keldric Faulk EDGE Auburn • Jr • 6'6" / 276 lbs Projected Team L.A. Chargers PROSPECT RNK 27th POSITION RNK 5th Khalil Mack is not going to play forever. While Los Angeles has found a viable performer in Tuli Tuipulotu, the team needs more at the position in the short and long term. Keldric Faulk is a young player who could learn behind Mack and then take over when the time is right. Faulk can set the edge and potentially grow as a pass rusher. Round 1 - Pick 23
T.J. Parker EDGE Clemson • Jr • 6'4" / 263 lbs Projected Team Philadelphia PROSPECT RNK 49th POSITION RNK 6th Philadelphia lost out on re-signing Jaelan Phillips, which leaves a void in the room. T.J. Parker is not a high-ceiling prospect, but he will be reliable in setting the edge and contribute to a collective pass-rush effort. From Jacksonville Jaguars Round 1 - Pick 24
Caleb Lomu OT Utah • Soph • 6'6" / 308 lbs Projected Team Cleveland PROSPECT RNK 14th POSITION RNK 3rd After taking Carnell Tate No. 6 overall, Cleveland continues remaking its offense with the addition of Caleb Lomu, a technically sound blocker who needs to improve his core strength. There are still questions at center, but the Browns have successfully remade the unit with Lomu, Elgton Jenkins, Zion Johnson and Tytus Howard. Round 1 - Pick 25
Peter Woods DL Clemson • Jr • 6'3" / 298 lbs Projected Team Chicago PROSPECT RNK 13th POSITION RNK 1st Peter Woods was once regarded as a potential top-five overall selection. Although I never saw him as a clear blue-chip talent, this is good value for the Clemson product and fills a need for the Bears. Round 1 - Pick 26
CJ Allen LB Georgia • Jr • 6'1" / 230 lbs Projected Team Buffalo PROSPECT RNK 38th POSITION RNK 5th Buffalo has a need at linebacker, and CJ Allen is a good fit for what Jim Leonhard is bringing to the team. He is not explosive or overly athletic, but he brings a calming leadership presence to the field. Round 1 - Pick 27
KC Concepcion WR Texas A&M • Jr • 6'0" / 196 lbs Projected Team San Francisco PROSPECT RNK 31st POSITION RNK 5th REC 61 REYDS 919 YDS/REC 15.1 TDS 12 KC Concepcion offers the schematic flexibility to play inside or outside. Kyle Shanahan will put him in the best position to succeed in a revamped receiver room that no longer includes staples such as Jauan Jennings, Deebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk. Round 1 - Pick 28
Caleb Banks DL Florida • Sr • 6'6" / 327 lbs Projected Team Houston PROSPECT RNK 46th POSITION RNK 7th DeMeco Ryans has taken veterans and cast offs to fill the defensive tackle rotation, but they stand to benefit from identifying fixtures in that role; just as they have with the secondary. Caleb Banks profiles as the type of player who has appealed to San Francisco -- where Ryans previously served as defensive coordinator -- in the past: long and athletic without sacrificing play strength. From Los Angeles Rams Round 1 - Pick 29
Colton Hood CB Tennessee • Soph • 6'0" / 195 lbs Projected Team Kansas City PROSPECT RNK 37th POSITION RNK 4th The reason I have shied away from Kansas City being aggressive and trading up for a specific player is because it has so many roles to fill on the roster. If one were to squint at the current state of the cornerback room, one could reasonably convince themselves that group could get them through the season. However, the team has little depth, and members of that unit have already dealt with injuries throughout their careers. From Denver Broncos Round 1 - Pick 30
Zion Young EDGE Missouri • Sr • 6'6" / 262 lbs Projected Team Miami PROSPECT RNK 76th POSITION RNK 10th Zion Young wins with power, consistently playing through his opponent. Miami went from stacked at edge rusher to needy after trading Jaelan Phillips and releasing Bradley Chubb. Chop Robinson has played well at times, and Young would be a good complement to his play style. Round 1 - Pick 31
Max Iheanachor OT Arizona State • Sr • 6'6" / 321 lbs Projected Team New England PROSPECT RNK 23rd POSITION RNK 6th There was a viral video recently of Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel getting hands-on in Max Iheanachor's workout. Right tackle is a position of need, and Iheanachor's play style matches the physicality Vrabel is trying to instill. Round 1 - Pick 32
Jadarian Price RB Notre Dame • Jr • 5'11" / 203 lbs Projected Team Seattle PROSPECT RNK 57th POSITION RNK 2nd RUYDS 674 YDS/ATT 6 REYDS 87 TDS 15 Post-Super Bowl, the Seahawks experienced a bit of a talent drain, losing running back Kenneth Walker III, edge rusher Boye Mafe and cornerback Riq Woolen. The team's task is to restock the cupboard. It could wait until No. 64 overall to address the position, but supply is lower than demand, which drives up the price. Seattle pairs Zach Charbonnet with Price, just as Price shared a backfield with Jeremiyah Love in South Bend. Round 2
