Wim and Marc Janssen – no relatives – but heads of drama at Belgiu’s VRT and RTBF reflect on milestone series ‘1985,’ and ‘Hunters,’ backed by  ‘Bad Boys’ directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and one of the eight New8 series just announced at Series Mania

From Brussels, to the World. Series Mania this year marks yet another strong Belgian showcase, as public broadcasters from the North (VRT) and South (RTBF) unite yet again to present compelling dramas, historical thrillers and strikingly relevant shows. A collaboration that, from an outsider’s point of view, could go without saying. But in Belgium, one does not simply craft a joint Flemish-French TV Drama.

It took almost ten years for Wim & Marc Janssen, both Head of Drama respectively for the Dutch-Speaking VRT and French-Speaking RTBF and (funnily enough) sharing both the same jobs and the same last name while not being relatives, to achieve their first joint success. In 2023, Belgian-born Eyeworks produced “1985”, a TV series directed by “The Twelve” director Willem Bouvijn focusing on the infamous Belgian Brabant Killers. The eight-episode show swept Belgian and European viewers after premiering at Canneseries, and marked yet another successful Janssen & Janssen (as they’re known in the sector) collaboration.
