Amazon’s epically expensive Lord of the Rings show gets a stunning new trailer

The one trailer to rule them all is here.

Amazon on Thursday dropped a stunning new teaser for its highly anticipated Lord of the Rings show, The Rings of Power, which takes place thousands of years before the events of Peter Jackson’s trilogy.

The footage centers largely around a young Galadriel, with Morfydd Clark taking over the role from Cate Blanchett. “There was a time when the world was so young,” Galadriel says. “There had not yet been a sunrise. But even then, there was light.”

While keeping the plot vague, the trailer provides a sense of the show’s epic scope, with one impressive establishing shot after another. Other characters featured in the footage include a young Elrond, previously played by Hugo Weaving. He tells Galadriel that she’s “fought long enough” and should “put up your sword,” only for her to respond that “the enemy is still out there.” We also get a look at the harfoots, who are described as ancestors of the hobbits, as well as some new dwarves.

The Rings of Power is a massive investment for Amazon Prime Video, which has dropped a mind-boggling $465 million just for the first season alone.

But in the quest for the next Game of Thrones, Amazon has some competition on its hands — from Game of Thrones itself. The HBO show’s first spinoff, House of the Dragonpremieres on August 21, less than two weeks before The Rings of Power debuts on Sept. 2.
