What Will Biden Do About Chinese Genocide?

By LEWIS MORRIS December 9, 2021

The president doesn’t want to offend the ChiComs with anything to protect Uyghur slaves.

There can be no denying that the Chinese government is committing genocide against the Muslim Uyghur population in Xinjiang province, and that President Xi Jinping is directly involved. With evidence mounting, is there anyone to call out Xi and the Chinese for their actions?

Joe Biden has intermittently talked tough about China, but he doesn’t appear to want to do much to upset the Chinese. Until yesterday, congressional Democrat leadership were in the same boat, keeping the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act from reaching Biden’s desk for a year, despite overwhelming bipartisan support in the House and Senate.

The House finally passed the bill Wednesday by an overwhelming 428-1 vote, along with similar vote totals for two other bills — one condemning “the ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity being committed against” Uyghur Muslims, and another rebuking the International Olympic Committee for “legitimizing” China’s bogus claims about tennis player Peng Shuai, whom our Emmy Griffin has written about here.

Speaking of the Olympics, the U.S. has at least led a diplomatic boycott of the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics, which has now been joined by the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.

Senate legislation, cosponsored by Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR), prohibits the importation of any goods made in the Xinjiang province. It passed by voice vote in July but got lost in the shuffle of other legislative mayhem, including the latest debates over the debt ceiling.

Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman reached out to Merkley in October to share the administration’s concern that the bill was too broad and should target specific goods and companies profiting from slave labor. Acting on the administration’s orders, Sherman called for the bill to be more targeted. In plain language, they want the bill watered down.

White House Press Secretary argued less than convincingly, “We are absolutely not lobbying in any way against the passage of this bill.”

Rubio had no luck getting the bill attached as an amendment to this year’s defense authorization. Democrats blocked his efforts on procedural grounds that would not pose an issue if they were truly dedicated to making this legislation happen. Rubio isn’t buying Psaki’s line, either, saying, “The Biden administration has been standing in the way for months.”

As popular as these bills are in their respective chambers, they must be reconciled before being passed on to Biden for his signature. Will that take another year? Will he sign it whenever it does come?

Any blockade of imports from Xinjiang is sure to ripple through the global supply chain. The Chinese have a near monopoly right now on solar panel components, and they are close to achieving monopoly status on minerals key to developing long-life rechargeable batteries for the electric cars we’re all supposed to be driving in 10 years. If Biden and the Left want to see their ecofascist agenda come to pass, they will need China’s help making it happen. That might result in having it both ways — passing this resolution but never quite getting it to Biden. The bill already ignores the fact that the Chinese can simply move their slave laborers. Democrats will be turning a blind eye to genocide for the sake of politics.

Biden has been two-faced on China most of his political career, and he currently appears stuck in time, harkening back to an age when China was supposedly a strategic partner, then a strategic competitor.

Whatever people want to say about the past, right now China is America’s enemy. It’s very basic. China is a strategic threat to the United States and to free people everywhere. The ChiComs have bought off world-governing bodies like the UN, which remains silent on the Uyghurs. They have wooed corporations whose only focus is bigger dividends for stockholders, and they have brainwashed narcissistic entertainers and athletes (well, except women tennis players) into doing their propaganda work for them.

The United States is the one place where people robbed, bullied, and murdered by the Chinese government can turn. But we cannot count on Biden. He dropped government investigations into China’s role in the origin of the COVID-19 outbreak. He has not supported democracy activists in Hong Kong. He has left Afghanistan wide open for the Chinese to claim the country’s lithium deposits. And Biden does nothing of substance as China continues to flex its military muscles over the Taiwan Strait.

It’s still possible to contain, maybe even neutralize, the Chinese threat to the existing world order, but that possibility will be frittered away if ChiCom Joe has anything to say about it.
